Mechanical loading of articular cartilage in the hip — and, as a result, the cartilage matrix composition — was altered by periacetabular osteotomy for developmental hip dysplasia, according to researchers’ findings.
The researchers prospectively assessed 37 patients (mean age: 26.2 years) who underwent periacetabular osteotomy for acetabular hip dysplasia. Delayed gadolinium-enhanced MRI of cartilage (dGermic) scans were performed preoperatively and the 1-year follow-up. Additionally, either during a 1-year or 2-year follow-up, physical examinations were performed, and utilizing WOMAC, patients’ outcomes were assessed.
