MEDSTAR SPORTS MEDICINE HOSTS PRESTIGIOUS AMERICAN ORTHOPAEDIC SOCIETY FOR SPORTS MEDICINE 2015 EUROPEAN TRAVELING FELLOWS
/EINPresswire.com/ — BALTIMORE, MD — (Marketwired) — 08/06/15 — MedStar Sports Medicine was selected as one of only six sites in the nation to host the prestigious American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) 2015 European Traveling Fellows. As one of the premier sports medicine programs in the country, MedStar Sports Medicine’s participation in this international exchange program fostered collaboration among colleagues worldwide, inspiring innovation and advancing the field of sports medicine.
MedStar Sports Medicine hosted the fellows from July 2-5 in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. During their visit, the fellows gained insight into the integrated sports medicine program of one of the nation’s largest health care systems. MedStar Sports Medicine brings together nearly 20 fellowship-trained sports orthopaedic surgeons and a network of primary care sports medicine providers, certified athletic trainers, physical therapists, nutritionists, sports performance professionals, and sports-specific researchers under a single tent covering the Baltimore/Washington corridor.
The fellows, including João Espregueira-Mendes, MD, of Portugal, past president of the European Society of Knee Surgery; Sebastian Kopf, MD, of Germany; Nicolas Pujol, MD, of France; and Christiaan van Bergen, MD, of the Netherlands, met with clinical and research leaders, toured MedStar Sports Medicine’s facilities, and spent time observing clinics, surgical procedures, lectures and labs.
AOSSM’s traveling fellowship program is an annual scientific and cultural exchange among orthopaedic sports medicine physicians in North America and Europe, Asia-Pacific and Latin America. The program is a unique opportunity for individuals to witness orthopaedic sports medicine techniques and surgeries from around the world. The program offers a rich experience with opportunities to:
- Foster an exchange of scientific information, stimulate research and develop partnerships among physicians who practice sports medicine in North America, Europe, Latin America and Pacific Rim countries
- Serve as a bridge that may be used to forge the future of sports medicine worldwide
- Provide a stimulus for leadership by recognizing young physicians who have made a significant contribution to sports medicine
- Participate in social and cultural activities with the local sports medicine community
MedStar Sports Medicine also hosted the AOSSM Latin American and Asian Traveling Fellows in 2012. This most recent visit makes MedStar Sports Medicine one of the few sports programs that have had the opportunity to work with all three traveling fellowships in the past five years.
