The global extremity products market to grow at a CAGR of 8.69% during the period 2016-2020.

Global Extremity Products Market 2016-2020, has been prepared based on an in-depth market analysis with inputs from industry experts. The report covers the market landscape and its growth prospects over the coming years. The report also includes a discussion of the key vendors operating in this market.

The term “extremity” is generally used to refer to a person’s limbs and their various parts. Lower extremities consist of the foot, toes, ankle, knee, shin, and thighs, while upper extremities include the shoulder, hand, elbow, forearm, wrist, and fingers. Extremity products are used to treat, repair, replace, or heal extremity injuries such as fractures or damage. These products include external recovery braces, surgical implants, joint replacements, biologics, and external support implants.

A trend which is boosting market growth is the growing popularity of minimally invasive procedures. Traditional open surgeries can cause post-operation complications such as pain, partially collapsed lungs, blood clots, fatigue, muscle atrophy, and infections. The anesthesia administered before surgeries can cause nausea, sore throat, confusion, and sleepiness.

To reduce such complications, medical facilities have started implementing minimally invasive techniques in their surgical procedures. These surgeries are associated with reduced cost and hospital stay, lower risks of post-operation infections, rapid results, and a faster recovery period.

According to the report, a key growth driver is the rising number of sports injuries. In 2010, athletes suffered 2000 injuries per 1000 people. Among these injuries, over 62% were related to extremities. In soccer alone, almost 80% of injury-affected players were under the age of 26 years, and 44% of these players were under the age of 15 years.

The National Football League (NFL) is one of the biggest sports leagues in the US. In 2015, over 42% of all the injuries in this league were knee related, followed by other parts of the leg, which accounted for 20% of the total injuries. The number of overall injuries has increased by almost 21% between 2012 and 2015. In the case of soccer, over 72% of injuries affect the feet or legs. Knee injuries account for 27% of all soccer injuries, with the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) being one of the major problems.

Further, the report states that one challenge that could derail market growth post-surgery complications. Cases of metal screws, plates, and rods getting displaced or even breaking in certain instances have also been reported. The negative impact on the mind-set of the people due to these complications may drive patients toward other non-surgical treatment methods.
