Dr. Alex Vaccaro: NO COVID19-Related Layoffs at Rothman Orthopaedic Institute
by Elizabeth Hofheinz, M.P.H., M.Ed., March 25, 2020
No one left behind. That is what the orthopedic surgeons at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute have decided….that no one at their facility will lose a job due to COVID19.
Alex Vaccaro, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., President and CEO of the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute, told OSN, “Our orthopedic surgeons are doing anything possible to protect jobs. No surgeon full partner will be taking a salary for the month of April. In addition, we are asking all employees to accept half of their regular pay, thus rendering them eligible for unemployment insurance. That is how we are protecting our 1,400 employees.”
“We are utilizing all forms of telemedicine. With HIPAA regulations being softened, we can use Facetime, Android, Facebook, etc. Through HIPAA compliant services our patients are sending their imaging studies to us. Patients with orthopedic emergencies where a delay in treatment may result in permanent dysfunction (infection, tendon disruption, unreducible joint dislocation, etc.) are undergoing surgery in our surgeon-owned hospital or in our ASC.”
“At this point we are not inundated with COVID19 patients, so we are able to surgically handle tumors, trauma, and infection. In certain situations where people are truly suffering, we are administering injections utilizing all necessary PPE. We have ordered 10,000 N95 masks which are due to arrive in early April.”
Those at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute are acting like leaders.
Anyone listening at other practices?
