The first surgeries in Europe using Stryker’s Gamma4 hip fracture nailing system have been successfully completed

The Gamma4 system is launched in Germany after more than 35 successful operations as part of a live broadcast

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, May 29, 2024 –( BUSINESS WIRE )– Stryker (NYSE:SYK), a global leader in medical technology, announced that the first surgeries using the Gamma4 Hip Fracture Nailing System in Europe have been performed at the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital LUKS, the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV) in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Hôpitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg in France. On June 4, 2024, Stryker will launch the system in Germany during a live broadcast , sharing key learnings and presenting case examples.

The Gamma4 Hip Fracture Nailing System is designed to treat hip and femoral neck fractures. Its nail design is based on Stryker’s SOMA database, which contains over 37,000 3D bone models generated from CT scans. The system received CE certification in November 2023 and has already been used in over 25,000 cases in North America and Japan.

“This moment is a significant milestone as the Gamma4 Hip Fracture Nailing System will now be available in the European market following its successful launch in the United States,” said Markus Ochs, Vice President and General Manager of Stryker’s European Trauma & Extremities Business. “This system demonstrates Stryker’s ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence in providing advanced medical solutions that provide surgeons around the world with options to optimize the surgical workflow and improve procedural efficiency.”

The first operations in Europe were carried out by:

  • Professor Frank Beeres, Chief Physician, PD Dr. med. Björn-Christian Link, Chief Physician and Clinic Director, Dr. med. Marcel Köppel and Dr. med. Ralf Baumgärtner from the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital LUKS, Switzerland
  • Professor Daniel Wagner, head of the Traumatology Unit and Doctor Kevin Moerenhout, Associate Doctor of the CHUV (Vaud University Hospital Centre) Lausanne, Switzerland
  • Professor Philippe Adams Department at Les Hôpitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg, France

The Swiss surgeons agreed that Gamma4 allows for individual adaptation to the anatomy of each patient and improves surgical outcomes thanks to several important features. The system’s intuitive instrumentation optimizes procedures and reduces the number of surgical steps required. The surgeons particularly appreciated the precision fit of the implants and the high quality of the instruments.

Since these first use cases, over 35 additional operations have been performed using the Gamma4 system in France, Italy, the UK and Switzerland.

During the live broadcast on June 4, 2024 at 17:30 CET, Stryker will provide key information and a detailed insight into the Gamma4 development philosophy. Renowned experts, including Professor Dr. Gerhard Schmidmaier from Heidelberg University Hospital, Privatdozent Dr. Arvind G. Von Keudell from Copenhagen University Hospital and Professor Dr. Julio de Caso Rodríguez from Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona, will lead in-depth case discussions from trauma surgery.
