HSS Appoints Mark Bowen, MD Inaugural Medical Advisor, Strategy & Business Development

NEW YORK, February 5, 2025–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), the world’s leading academic medical center focused on musculoskeletal health, today announced the appointment of renowned surgeon, scientist, educator and leader Mark Bowen, MD,as Medical Advisor, Strategy & Business Development, effective March 1.

In this newly created role, Dr. Bowen will serve as a strategic partner to HSS President & CEO, Bryan T. Kelly, MD, MBA, Chief Strategy, Growth and Transformation Officer Justin Oppenheimer, and the HSS Sports Medicine Institute. He will focus on developing novel programs and clinical platforms and identifying and advancing strategic opportunities that enhance patient care, expand partnerships, and strengthen the institution’s position as the global leader in musculoskeletal health.

Dr. Bowen graduated with multiple honors from Cornell University Medical College and completed his orthopedic surgery residency and a Sports Medicine fellowship at HSS. He rejoins HSS from Endeavor Health in Chicago where he has been Chief of Sports Medicine since 2012. Dr. Bowen served as Head Team Physician for the Chicago Bears for more than 30 years (1992-2024) as well as the Chicago Blackhawks (1997-2005) and Chicago Cubs (1991-1992). During his professional career, he held faculty and leadership positions at Northwestern University Medical School and University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Dr. Bowen also founded The Northwestern Orthopedic Institute and River North Same Day Surgery Surgicenter.

A highly regarded Sports Medicine surgeon with extensive expertise in the treatment of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), rotator cuff and meniscus injuries, Dr. Bowen has contributed more than 60 orthopedic publications and given numerous presentations at scientific meetings globally.
