ATLANTA, Oct. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Piedmont Orthopedics | OrthoAtlanta is pleased to welcome Michael Bergen, MD, to its Sandy Springs location. A fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and orthopedic trauma, Dr. Bergen brings advanced expertise in arthroscopic and reconstructive procedures for the knee, shoulder and ankle, as well as fracture care and post-traumatic reconstruction.
Dr. Bergen earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology, with a minor in Computer Science, summa cum laude from Emory University before earning his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident. He went on to complete an orthopedic trauma fellowship at Brown University, receiving the Fellow Teaching Award, followed by a sports medicine fellowship at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute.
His clinical interests include knee, shoulder and ankle arthroscopy; primary and revision ACL reconstruction; patellofemoral and ankle instability; meniscus repair; cartilage restoration; rotator cuff repair; shoulder instability surgery; post-traumatic reconstruction of the knee and ankle; joint replacement of the knee and shoulder; and fracture care.
Dr. Bergen also brings experience caring for athletes at the highest levels of competition. He has served as an assistant team physician for the Los Angeles Chargers of the NFL, Brown University Athletics and several high school and collegiate football programs in Southern California.
In addition to his orthopedic training, Dr. Bergen has a background in computer science and software development, including developing and publishing mobile applications. This experience has contributed to his interest in the thoughtful application of technology in orthopedic surgery, including three-dimensional preoperative planning, computer-assisted navigation and patient-specific instrumentation.

Dr. Bergen is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. His research and publications have focused on topics including orthopedic trauma, sports injuries, patient-specific digital modeling and 3D printing, ligament reconstruction and pediatric fracture care.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Bergen enjoys golf, photography, scuba diving and skiing.
