Pitt startup Magnesium Ring wins $2,500 prize
A University of Pittsburgh startup that is developing an alternative to knee surgery took first place in the Winners Circle competition Monday at the Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative offices downtown.
Magnesium Ring received the first-place award of $2,500 for a biodegradable metallic scaffold that could replace anterior cruciate ligament repair surgery. The Winners Circle event was co-sponsored by the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative and Pittsburgh Technology Council.
The startup also took first place in April at the University of Pittsburgh’s Randall Family Big Idea Competition, which awarded the company $20,000.
Katie Ferraro and Danielle Martin are Magnesium Ring principals. Ferraro is a doctoral candidate in Pitt’s bioengineering program, and Martin is in the university’s MBA program.
