Use shoulder resurfacing hemiarthroplasty with caution in young patients

Registers of orthopaedic procedures provide physicians and others with several benefits and may reveal problematic implants or help narrow the indications for a given procedure.

When Jeppe V. Rasmussen, MD, and colleagues studied shoulder resurfacing hemiarthroplasty outcomes for two implants in the Danish Shoulder Arthroplasty Register, they found patients younger than 55 years who underwent the procedure for osteoarthritis had lower scores on the Western Ontario Osteoarthritis of the Shoulder Index than older patients at 1 year postoperatively.

“Resurfacing shoulder arthroplasty is associated with an acceptable patient-reported outcome, but a high revision rate,” Rasmussen said in an articleabout the research in Orthopaedics Today Europe. “The results in younger patients are worrying.”

Rasmussen called for further research into this treatment to fully document its outcomes.
