Zyga Technology Announces Launch and First Commercial Use of Updated SImmetry® Sacroiliac Joint Fusion System

MINNETONKA, Minn.March 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Zyga Technology, Inc., a medical device company focused on the design, development and commercialization of minimally invasive devices to treat underserved conditions of the lumbar spine, today announced the launch and first commercial use of an updated SImmetry Sacroiliac Joint Fusion System. The surgery was performed by Dr. Brett Menmuir.

“The ability to use sacroiliac joint fusion as a treatment modality is incredibly important for the effective management of my patients presenting with sacroiliac dysfunction,” stated Dr. Brett Menmuir, who performed the surgery at the Reno Orthopedic Clinic in Nevada. “What makes the SImmetry system unique is its ability to decorticate effectively within the joint, removing cartilage and debriding the articulating surfaces to create the optimal environment for arthrodesis and a successful clinical outcome.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists low back pain (LBP) as the second most common cause of disability in U.S. adultsi. It has been reported that approximately 20 percent of all chronic LBP derives from the sacroiliac jointii.

“Minimally invasive SI joint fusion is showing a steady increase in clinical acceptance, as demonstrated through increased clinical utilization and assignment in 2015 of a Category 1 CPT code by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS),” said Jim Bullock, president and CEO of Zyga Technology. “We believe unequivocally that SI joint fusion should be founded on the proven orthopedic principles that guide spine surgery, including joint decortication and bone grafting. Our instrumentation and our proprietary SImmetry Decorticator are designed specifically for that purpose.”
