Bird joins IAN as chief development officer
CHARLESTON, SC – Ted Bird has joined the Medical University of South Carolina’s (MUSC) Institute for Applied Neurosciences (IAN) in the role of chief development officer. This is a key appointment for IAN, demonstrating its commitment to ensuring novel ideas and technologies co-developed by IAN and MUSC Neurosciences faculty and staff make it into the marketplace to change patients’ lives.
“Mr. Bird is a welcomed addition to IAN. His background and breadth of experience are exactly what we need at MUSC to strengthen our technology commercialization efforts,” said Michael Rusnak, MUSC Foundation for Research Development executive director.
Bird will lead IAN’s business development activities, which include:
- assisting the team with business analysis and valuations of IAN ideas / technologies
- licensing and/or selling them to the appropriate commercial partners
- developing the organization for growth and success through strategic planning, marketing and fundraising.
Bird brings extensive experience and connections in the global medical device industry to IAN and has a strong track record of success in sales, marketing and executive leadership roles with companies such as Orthofix, DePuy, Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson, Boston Scientific and Smith & Nephew.
“I am excited to join this unique model of having innovation and technology development embedded within a clinical and scientific department at a renowned university medical school such as MUSC.
