Portland study finds spinal surgery recovery takes much longer than expected

Spinal neurosurgeons may be giving their patients inaccurate information on how long it will take them to recover and return to work, according to a new study by Oregon Health & Science University.

Many surgeons tell patients that recovery from lumbar discectomy, the most common form of spinal surgery, takes a few weeks. But the study, led by Dr. Khoi Than, a neurosurgeon and assistant professor at the university, indicates that recovery actually takes more time — on the order of two or three months, Than said.
