SMARTdrill 6.0 Now Available for Orthopedic Surgery
LAS VEGAS, March 11, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — The SMARTdrill 6.0 has been listed with the FDA and is now available in the United States for some of the most common orthopedic surgical procedures. Smart Medical Devices Inc. (SMD) will introduce the SMARTdrill 6.0 in the coming weeks.
“I watched surgeons struggle every day with conventional drilling technology. Our discussions and many years of hard work led to the creation of the SMARTdrill,” said Wayne Anderson, MD, MBA, chief executive officer of Smart Medical Devices.
“As an orthopedic surgeon, I agree that we have a problem with our most basic skill-set of drilling bone and placing screws,” said Mike Karch, MD, FAAOS, co-founder of Smart Medical Devices Inc., clinical associate professor of orthopedic surgery at the Georgetown University School of Medicine and chair of the Mammoth Orthopedic Institute. “The SMARTdrill’s innovative technology addresses this problem by providing the surgeon with real-time drilling data to inform their clinical decisions and choice of implant hardware.”
The SMARTdrill 6.0 is on the forefront of osteoscopy, or radiation-free continuous drill bit localization which minimizes the use of x-ray.
“I am all too familiar with the challenges and inefficiencies in the operating room due to using 50-year-old technology. The SMARTdrill will improve the typical workflow by reducing the number of steps used to place surgical hardware,” said John (Jack) Perry, MD, FAAOS, co-founder of Smart Medical Devices Inc. and practicing surgeon in Melbourne, Florida.
This technology may be helpful to health-care systems and insurance companies that are seeking to reduce costs and improve patient outcomes.
SMARTdrill 6.0 will be featured at the 2019 American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meeting Innovation Theater on March 13, 2019, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and at AAOS 2019 Annual Meeting – Booth #4421 (Smart Medical Devices Inc.).
ABOUT SMARTdrill 6.0 System
The SMARTdrill 6.0 is a surgical drill that curtails drill and screw plunge and accurately measures depth, torque and energy in real time. This cutting-edge patented technology was developed to address the limitations of current equipment and improve patient outcomes for the most common orthopedic surgical procedures. The Graphical Use Interface, or GUI, provides convenient visual confirmation of drill performance and location that will help the surgeon optimize drill depth, screw selection and insertion, and choice of implant hardware. The SMARTdrill 6.0 system* and SMARTbit drill bits are now available in the United States.
