Surgeons see the need for herniated disc repair using the AnchorKnot® Tissue Approximation Kit
WILMINGTON, NC, May 1, 2019 /PRNewswire/ – The AnchorKnot® Tissue Approximation Kit continues to see increased adoption in the US. Over the past year, Dr. George Van Huffmon and Dr. R. Mark Rodger operating out of the New Hanover Regional Medical Center in North Carolina have been providing herniated disc repair using the AnchorKnot Tissue Approximation Kit.
Research has shown that the reherniation rate for patients undergoing a discectomy procedure for a herniated disc is 10-15%. Dr. Huffmon’s own research has shown that within the first three months (following surgery) there is an increased risk of recurrent herniation.
The AnchorKnot Tissue Repair system allows surgeons to maintain a minimally invasive technique and closure of defects in herniated disc repair procedures. The surgeons at the Atlantic Neurosurgical & Spine Specialists and at EmergeOrtho recognize the benefits of the AnchorKnot device and screen their patients for possible candidates. Dr. Huffmon comments, “If we can repair the tissue defect, then there might be some added value to the discectomy procedure”.
Neil Godara, VP R&D of Anchor Orthopedics, comments that “We are increasingly hearing from physicians that the AnchorKnot system answers the call for an efficient solution to defect closure in a discectomy procedure. We developed the AnchorKnot system specifically to help in herniated disc repair procedures and we are looking forward to working with physicians such as Dr. Huffmon and Dr. Rodger who are motivated to improve patient outcomes and reduce rehospitalizations.”
