EDGe Surgical, Leading Innovators in Smart Surgical Instrumentation, Raises $5 Million and Raises the Bar for Accuracy and Safety

CHICAGO, IL – [December 7, 2020] EDGe Surgical, Inc. – Chicago-based orthopedic surgical company and makers of the single-use electronic depth gauge, EDG® Ortho 65mm, recently closed 5M led by Sectoral Asset Management (www.sectoral.com), an investment advisor specializing in managing global equities in the healthcare sector. Michael SjÖstrÖm, Senior Partner at Sectoral, stated, “EDGe Surgical’s products are innovative and enabling. They fit perfectly with our vision of an accelerating transition of orthopedic and spine procedures to the ASCs. We are excited about the company’s future.”

“With this new round of funding, we will be able to further advance the march toward a more accurate and bioburden-free surgical environment, which becomes ever more important when considering the impact from COVID-19,” said Christopher Wilson, RAC, President and CEO of EDGe Surgical. “These funds will also pave the way for EDGe Surgical to bring another groundbreaking product to the spinal surgery market: the Awl-in-One Tap™, a single-use system for creating a posterior pedicle screw-hole pathway with integrated neuromonitoring capability.”

It is estimated that surgical site infections (SSIs) cost approximately $8.4 billion per year. In addition, one study found that approximately 20% of screws were significantly mismeasured, with a recent study showing the EDG® Ortho 65mm reducing this error by 90%.

K.C. Hoos, EDGe Surgical’s VP of Sales and Marketing, says, “It is estimated that screw measurement error costs more than $500 million annually. Using legacy tools and techniques, surgeons often need to measure multiple times per drilled screw hole, which increases surgical time, can lead to inaccuracies and ultimately, patient complications. With our EDG® Ortho 65mm, surgeons measure once to get an accurate and consistent measurement every time.”

Wilson notes, “Sterilization of reusable instruments is not always successful, especially with devices like a legacy metal depth gauge with a long, narrow lumen. By providing a reliable, precise, never-before-used smart depth gauge, we eliminate a significant source of contamination concern for surgeons and hospitals.  Being a single-use device, the EDG® Ortho 65mm addresses the bioburden contamination risk associated with the legacy reusable depth gauge.”
