First Outpatient Spine Surgery Conducted At Shrewsbury Surgery Center

Dr. Arno Sungarian successfully completed the site’s first spine procedure.

Shrewsbury, Mass., October 25, 2021 /OrthoSpineNews/ – The Surgery Center in Shrewsbury is proud to announce that the first outpatient discectomy at the L3-L4 was recently successfully completed at the site located at 151 Main Street in Shrewsbury, MA by Arno Sungarian, MD, UMass Memorial Health neurologic surgeon. The Surgery Center, a collaboration of UMass Memorial Health, Shields Health Care Group, and Reliant Medical Group, is one of only a few outpatient ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) performing this type of procedure in Massachusetts.

The procedure took less than one-hour at The Surgery Center and the patient was able to recover from the comfort of their home by early afternoon. In Massachusetts, spine surgeries are typically conducted in a hospital setting requiring an overnight stay by the patient. State-of-the-art facilities like The Surgery Center eliminate the need for a hospital admission. In addition, the Shrewsbury site offers an abundance of other benefits to the patient such as high patient satisfaction rates and the ability to recover in the comfort of their own home.

This milestone establishes a strong precedent for the type of outpatient surgeries and joint replacements the Shrewsbury Surgery Center looks forward to continuing.

“Collaborative partnerships such as that the Shrewsbury Surgery Center lead to important milestones and expanded outpatient surgery options for patients,” said Mr. Prashanth Bala, MS, MHA, Vice President of ASC Operations at Shields Health Care Group. “This facility is designed to maximize efficiency for our partners while delivering critical patient-centered surgical services in a convenient location at an accessible price for patients.”

The Surgery Center in Shrewsbury, MA was developed through a community collaboration between Shields and industry leaders Reliant Medical Group, part of OptumCare, and UMass Memorial Health. The Surgery Center is open Monday through Friday from 6 AM to 5 PM and offers high quality, outpatient surgery options. For more information, visit https://www.surgerycentershrewsbury.com/.
