Morse, MD, a fifth-year resident at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), earned the title of Grand Champion in OREF’s second National Resident Research Symposium. Dr. Morse presented his research on vertebral stem cells and spinal fusion.

The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF), the leading private organization funding orthopaedic research across all subspecialties, is pleased to announce Kyle W. Morse, MD, a fifth-year resident at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), earned the title of Grand Champion in OREF’s second National Resident Research Symposium. Dr. Morse presented his research on vertebral stem cells and spinal fusion.
“Our research can have tremendous impact on patient care. By better understanding the underlying biological mechanisms for spine fusion and the cells responsible for fusion mass production, we hope to identify therapeutic targets and pathways specific to these cells to maximize the fusion mass, prevent pseudarthrosis, and thereby improve patient outcomes,” Dr. Morse said.
Dr. Morse graduated with a BS in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He finished a post-baccalaureate program at Columbia University and completed medical school at Weill Cornell Medical College.

OREF’s Resident Research Symposia give residents a taste of being a clinician scientist and the opportunity to gain experience in discussing their research publicly. Residents apply through a competitive process to participate in regional symposia. Presentations are scored by a panel of judges with top presenters receiving a cash award and an invitation to participate in the national symposium. The 2022 award will be presented to Dr. Morse at an OREF event during the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting in Las Vegas in March.
