Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics contributes to OMeGA Medical Grants Association
The OMeGA Medical Grants Association announced that Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics has donated $100,000 in funding for the 2010-2011 academic year. Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics’ contribution benefits the adult reconstruction sub-specialty category.
“OMeGA has been persistent in their focus on independence and creating systems to reduce and eliminate conflicts of interest and bias,” Peter Heeckt, MD, chief medical officer of Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics, stated in an OMeGA press release. “We appreciate their perseverance and are pleased to support OMeGA and orthopedic graduate medical education.”
The OMeGA Medical Grants Association was established 2 years ago through the American Orthopaedic Association to provide a “clear and fair mechanism to distribute available funds through industry to advance orthopedic medicine and support graduate medical education,” according to a 2008 OMeGA press release. Zimmer Holdings was the first company to contribute to OMeGA. In addition to Zimmer and Smith & Nephew, Synthes has also contributed to the association.
“We appreciate Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics’ support of OMeGA’s mission, and look forward to a long relationship enhancing GME,” C. McCollister Evarts, MD, OMeGA president, noted in the recent press release.
OMeGA announced its grant recipients for the 2010-2011 academic year in early June. Forty-eight fellowship grants in nine sub-specialty categories and 22 residency/general education grants were awarded. Recipients included orthopedic allopathic and osteopathic programs in the United States and Canada.
The OMeGA board and review committee evaluates applications based on objective orthopaedic criteria and thorough knowledge of academic environment, according to the association’s press release.
