5 Common Misconceptions You May Have About Foot Pain

Posted by Dr. Jeffrey L. Adler

The world is flat. The sky is purple. Dinosaurs never existed. These are all misconceptions that you can easily prove wrong. But what about false beliefs you have about your feet? Those aren’t so easily demystified, mostly because we haven’t done a good job of exposing the truth. People are still under the impression their foot pain just is what it is and it’s just their lot in life to live with it. Let’s set at least 5 common misconceptions straight.

1.  The Hand Your Were Dealt

There are some things you just have to live with. You don’t get to choose your parents, so genetics is one of those things. You inherited certain traits and that’s just the way you are. You get your brown eyes and short stature from your mom and your curly hair and faulty foot structure from your dad. Therefore, the problems you experience that cause your foot pain, like bunions, flat feet or hammertoes, are just the cards you were dealt.

While it’s true that you are born with certain issues, like an abnormal bone structure in the foot, and this can lead to foot pain, there are simple treatment options available to help your conditions to get you back in the game!

2.  Growing Pains

As we grow and develop over time, so do our feet. For example, we’re born with flat feet and by the age of 6 or so should have developed the arch in our foot. If as a child you don’t have a normal internal bone structure, you may never fully develop the arch in your foot, which leads to future complications in the feet.

So it’s not just growing pains at all, but a matter of the internal structure of your foot, and will ultimately need to be corrected with the right treatment.
